“Gerhard Himmer steht mit seiner Malerei für jene prozessuale und selbstreferenzielle Ausrichtung des Tafelbildes, innerhalb deren die autonome Aussagekraft von Farbe als Material sowie die taktilen Eigenschaften der Bildoberfläche das Thema sind. In einer Art medialer Selbstdarstellung generieren sich seine abstrakten Kompositionen bar jeglichen gestischen Pinselstrichs aus den fundamentalen Eigenschaften und Reaktionsweisen von Farbe, deren Verhältnis zur Schwerkraft und zur Beschaffenheit des Bildgrundes. Himmers Gemälde sind von einer starken Spannung zwischen Kontrolle und Fluidität bestimmt. Die Fläche wird zum Raum.“

““With his painting, Gerhard Himmer stands for the processual and self-referential orientation of the panel painting, within which the autonomous expressiveness of colour as a material and the tactile properties of the picture surface are the theme. In a kind of medial self-portrayal, his abstract compositions, devoid of any gestural brushstrokes, are generated from the fundamental properties and reaction modes of colour, its relationship to gravity and the nature of the pictorial ground. Himmer’s paintings are characterised by a strong tension between control and fluidity. The surface becomes a space.”
